I contend that everyone? /should/ have at least some degree of agnosticism. No matter what side of the argument you believe, the fact is we can't conclusively prove one way or the other. If you're going to assert your religion, fine, but accept that others may disagree. If you're going to assert atheism, fine, but you need to keep that same open mind that lead you to your decision, not close it once the decision is made. Personally, I'm an atheist, but I'm not really an active atheist.

HA, he'll have the "time and energy" when the funding for his planetarium are sent to a creationist museum...lolz Doesn't matter if you're atheist or agnostic,? you're still tied for my favorite scientist with Sam Harris.

Totally agree! We all wear lables. You appear male, African descent, educated & scientist by your own lable. If I apply neg baggage to any of those, do you drop them? Since you see no? evidence for religious claims or a god, that is called atheism. As far as activism, if you want to protect scientific inquiery & improving the human condition, you would identify with activists. Sep of church/state & keeping rel private, is the only way for science to advance & to make us competitive in the world.
By: ctressle. on 26 May 12, 01:49:45
are agnostic by definition. Now bear with me here: If you believe in a god, it's possible you would not only still not know if there was a god, but be able to admit this to yourself. In which case, you would be an agnostic theist. Similarly for agnostic strong atheists. Whew! Ok, so while I agree on Tyson's attitude on how he goes about his daily life, he still is not understanding the definitions properly. Whether he realizes it or not, or wants to admit it or not, he is? an atheist.
By: ctressle. on 26 May 12, 01:41:27
If you claim to know that a god exists, then you would believe by definition of the word 'know', so you would be a gnostic theist. Which means you know (gnostic), and you believe (theist). If you claim to know that no gods exist, then you would believe there are none, so you would be a gnostic strong atheist. So if you're claiming to know one? way or another, you're going to believe that same way. By contraposition, if you don't believe either way then you don't know either way, so weak atheists
By: ctressle. on 26 May 12, 01:35:14
if you believe in god, or you are not answering the question, without realizing this. B/c given the grammar of the question, the questioner is asking do you *believe* not if you *know*. But if you don't know if whether or not you believe in a god, you probably don't believe in a god given that you are basically? admitting you have never thought about it before and therefore would have the neutral stance i.e. on the fence, not believe either way. So what about knowing if there is a god?
By: ctressle. on 26 May 12, 01:30:49
left side is strong atheism. As an aside, strong atheists might be considered cynics, theists gullible, while weak atheists skeptical. The middle, in the category of atheism, comprise of skeptics who are waiting to be convinced one way or another. So where does agnosticism come into? 'Agnostic' is an adjective, like 'red'. But ignoring that for the moment, if someone asks you 'do you believe in a? god?' and your only answer is, 'I don't know!', then you are either saying you don't know if you
By: ctressle. on 26 May 12, 01:27:35
I believe there are no gods", but then you are making a claim. That would be strong atheism. So iow if you are not on "the right side of the fence", you could be on the fence or on the left side but either way you are an atheist, while theists who believe in god would be on the right side. As a final way of putting it, being an atheist simply means you are not on the right side, regardless of whether or not you are on the left side of? or on the fence itself. On the fence is weak atheism, on the

However, one might find themselves not convinced of both sides: not convinced of the claim that there is any god, not convinced of the claim that there are none. But you are still an atheist, b/c you are not convinced of the claim there is a god. Such a person would just be a 'weak atheist'. So look, the gist of this is, if you can not say yes to the question, "do you believe in a god?", then your only default answer? is 'no', which makes you an atheist. You may go one step further and say, "well
By: ctressle. on 26 May 12, 01:20:46
simply means, 'lack in belief of? a god or any gods'. So if you are not convinced there is sufficient evidence for a god, then by definition you are an atheist. That's it. There is no philosophical baggage that comes with the term. If you are convinced that there is no god, for whatever reason, then you are a 'strong atheist' b/c you are making a positive claim. But being convinced there are no gods implies that you are not convinced there are any, so by definition you would still be an atheist.

If 'Golf Players' was a large community comprising like a majority of the population, had an agenda and marginalized non-golf players, in a historical context where given a peculiar evolution of the native language, then yes there might actually be a word for non-golf players. Given the marginalization of non-theists, who happened to have been branded 'atheists' in the past, and given the nature? of this agenda then it's not surprising that there are many 'active atheists'. But the term 'atheist'

Well, you know what? I did your mom last night and I certainly wasn't "intolerant" of her nappy snatch, lopsided breasts, and severe cellulite which by the way she should really see a doctor about. So yeah? according to evolution your extreme ignorance is the result of shitty genes passed down by a genetically inferior family. So how about you suck on that, you soap obsessed bald prick ;)
By: MrClean2319. on 25 May 12, 21:42:21
I'm not trying to justify any bad behavior. I know? wrong when I see them. That's just common sense. Something that you obviously don't have much of if you need to put labels on every single type of person and judge them before you even know them. My point is there are a lot of good Christians out there who don't discriminate. Your disregard for that simple fact is probably one of the major reasons they find us on the agnostic atheist front to be so intolerant.
By: MrClean2319. on 25 May 12, 21:39:26
Come on Mr. Clean! You know damn well what I mean and your minority tangent does nothing more than further pettifog a topic that you obviously have skewed my views on already. You need to stop? nit-picking at legitimate arguments and take a look at the real enemies afoot here. You're honestly going to sit there and try to justify all the bloodshed hatred and confusion that these so called respectable religions have caused? It's not being dogmatic, it's called being realistic!
By: MrClean2319. on 25 May 12, 21:36:23
Hahaha now who is the one being dogmatic? Take a look at what you just did there. Throwing all Christians? in to the small box of radical fringe fundamentalists. I guarantee you cannot determine the humility of one's character by religious perspective alone. I personally tend to side with the atheists on most issues but I have respect for all religions especially those who do not use their scriptures to justify the hatred and persecution of minorities or anyone outside their little group.
By: MrClean2319. on 25 May 12, 21:33:21
Hold on there, Clean! I think the general message of that is way too close to being dismissive of those the atheistic beliefs. Nothing angers me more than when a militant Christian fundamentalist does everything in their power to paint those on the other side (atheists for this instance) as just as if not more intolerant and self righteous than they are which is simply not true. I'd be a hypocrite if I allowed you to do the? same especially considering we're all on the same team.
By: MrClean2319. on 25 May 12, 21:30:52
You know that's a very good point, Mr Clean. I believe that his choice to take upon the label of agnostic minimizes any inherent vulgarity or? self-righteousness that often piggybacks on the atheistic label.
By: MrClean2319. on 25 May 12, 21:29:19
Mr. Tyson is taking the road of humbleness and humility which I think is very responsible as well as respectable. He is basically proclaiming his doubt of religion based upon all of the scientific evidence as well as anecdotal evidence mounting against it while all the while not putting all of his eggs in one basket by acknowledging the? 0.001% chance that there may be some form of god or higher power which we have yet to discover.
By: CreepX. on 25 May 12, 19:47:20
keep dodging that bullet...? he knows how quickly he will be judged by ignorant people... see the comments above and below...
By: malniqm. on 25 May 12, 19:37:54
That makes you an agoflist. I like these videos but atheism is simply an inverse of theism, the belief in a deity. If golf ever becomes the majority rule, then the word 'agolfist' would undoubtedly? become an option for identifying yourself.
